Kabinettkarten #1
I combined 19th century cabinet card portraits with hand-drawn elements. I intend to confront the viewer with the idea that the purpose of photography itself is changing throughout time, and that photographs are used less and less as a way of conserving memory and personal identity.
Moreover, by adding hand-painted elements to cabinet card portraits, the fact that the person portrayed is forgotten becomes more obvious. Facial characteristics are hidden by colourful patterns. Eyes, lips and gestures are invisible. In sum, the identity of the people portrayed is at once hidden obscured, reinterpreted and transferred to modern times.
